About St George's

This large parish church, consecrated in November 1900 and with a seating capacity of 500, was built in the Early English style and consisted originally only of a nave, aisles and south porch because the new building fund was insufficient to cover the provision of a chancel and a tower. The architect was a Mr M H Medland FRIBA of Gloucester. Subsequently the chancel, Lady Chapel and vestries were added in 1939 in memory of those who died in the First World War but the church tower was never built because of the continuing lack of money. The adjoining Parish Room was built as a major extension to the vestries in 1980 and is used frequently by the community at large for all sorts of activities.

The church, being relatively modern has few items of historical interest in it but it does contain some interesting stained windows in the south aisle – three that depict St Luke, St Paul and St Barnabas all bearing the wheat sheaf mark of Kempe and three depicting St Richard of Chichester, St George and St Martin.   The remaining stained glass window, depicting the prophetess Anna bears the craft mark (a greyhound) of Herbert Bryans. The East window, erected in 1977, was designed by Peter Strong whilst the mural on the West wall, depicting community life in Nailsworth, was painted by Sir Oliver Heywood in 1985. There is no churchyard around the church.

St George’s is the “Town” church where the community gather for the annual Remembrance Day services and the Town Carol Service in December.

 ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH, SHORTWOOD

This small country church with a seating capacity of 200 people, situated a few miles from Nailsworth, was consecrated in 1866. It stands on the site of an old Poorhouse in which a weekly evening service had been held for many years previously and which it had become necessary to sell at that time. The money required was raised by private subscription assisted by grants from the Warneford Trustees and the Diocesan Society.

The churchyard is now “closed” but there is a small memorial garden set aside for the burial of cremated remains.

Because of a rapidly declining congregation and major structural repairs identified after the last Quinquennial report in 2007, the Nailsworth Parochial Church Council resolved recently with great regret to seek this church’s closure by the end of 2009.

SUNDAY SERVICES FOR CHILDREN

Children are most welcome at the 9.30am Family Communion Services. If parents wish, however, under 5s can go to a crèche in the Parish Room where there are toilets and hot water facilities whilst the over 5s may attend Sunday School.

OPEN THE BOOK:

Open the Book is a nationwide scheme to present Bible stories from both the Old and New Testament in ways that are lively engaging and informative. Each dramatised session is about 10 minutes long and is part of the collective worship in schools.

We have two ecumenical teams which present ‘Open the Book’ in Horsley school on Tuesdays and in Nailsworth school on Fridays. Some of us belong to both teams and some concentrate their efforts on one school.

Our aim is to enable every child in our schools to hear the story of the Bible in their primary years, thus opening their eyes, hearts and minds to discover all the wonder and wisdom that the Bible can offer.

The bonus is we love doing it and, best of all, the children really enjoy it!

You can find out more about this scheme at www.openthebook.net

VISITING AND BEFRIENDING SCHEME

At St George's we recognise that 'church' is not just a building but is the people within it joining together to worship God. We aim to provide support to our church throughout the week, not just on Sundays, through our befriending scheme.

Each member of the church has a befriender, of which at present there are fifteen.  They keep in touch in several ways i.e., a visit or telephone call, meeting up in church or out for a cup of tea/coffee.  If the member is ill, may be shopping or a lift to the doctors or hospital and home communion can be arranged.

The befrienders themselves meet monthly in the Parish room on the second Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm for a short time, to make sure that individuals are not missed and to discuss any needs that have arisen. This is all done in the strict confidence within the group.

Meets second Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm
